Ensuring affordable power for all is key challenge for new govt: Nasrul

PBA Desk, Dhaka: State minister for power, energy, and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid has said the major challenge of the new government would be to ensure affordable power and energy. Recently, Nasrul Hamid said these in an exchange of views with journalists in the ministry in Dhaka.

Nasrul Hamid said that the government was mulling over taking up long-term projects for the power sector as its short-term and intermediate projects had already been implemented. He said, ‘We [have] already achieved success in ensuring access to power and energy over the past several years.’

Nasrul added, Bangladesh would require investment to the tune of $40 billion in order to implement power and energy projects over the next 5 years.

Responding to journalists’ queries, he said the government would rearrange some power- and energy-related plans as per lessons from previous mistakes. Mr Hamid also said implementing smart grid would be necessary to tap renewable energy sources.

The minister expressed his hope that Bangladesh would also be able to start exporting electricity to Nepal in winter when the local demand decreases.
